The Planner Survey 2010

The moment at least some of us have been waiting for! The results have been tabulated, analyzed and even designed this year. I’ve posted them on both SlideShare and Scribd so you can download them from whichever you prefer. All of my commentary is in the report, but please comment here after you’ve had a chance to read it. Would love to know what you think.

  7. Hello, great job this year too!
Back here in Romania I was honestly expecting to see in the report data for European Union, not only for UK. Its’ no use for us and it’s not motivating… and I helped you answering this survey each year. :(

If you manage to do something about it, please e-mail me and I’ll post the results on my website. Thanks.

  8. In a very ambiguous environment, often victim of self made experts, it’s good to know what reality is.

Very comprehensive. Thanks for delivering it. And it holds completely true for me in London

  14. As an aspiring planner who will be searching for a job in less than a year, this really gave me some insights into the profession that I haven’t seen anywhere else. Thank you so much for posting!

Thanks so much, Heather & Co.! The design this year was awesome.
The survey has motivated me to push myself more each day in my new job at a tiny agency, and to think of my abilities as being more valuable than I thought.

I’ve been an avid follower of your survey since you introduced it to my Miami Ad School class a few years ago. It really helps budding planners learn more about our career paths. Thank you again, Heather and team!

  21. It would be phenomenal if this included interactive elements–the ability to add compiled Twitter accounts for the ~1600 respondents–in the final report.

It’s very impressive how this survey has being improved, better than the previous year and also getting bigger and more expressive.
Thank you girls for the amazing job!

  26. beautiful and inspiration! i look forward to this survey every year.

  27. Hi Heather,

Great survey overall. However, why didn’t you explore race/ethnicity in this year’s survey? I thought the aforementioned to be very interesting and insightful in 2009′s version (of the survey).

    • Hi Kenji,

Thanks. Didn’t put in ethnicity because the information hadn’t changed much since last year – still very limited evidence of diversity in the US compared with the general population:
      82% White/Caucasian
      3% Black/African American
      7% Hispanic
      9% Asian
      4% Other
(numbers don’t add up to 100 because people were able to select all that apply)

I set a limit on the survey around 40 pages, so not everything gets to stay each year.

      • Kevin Brockenbrough

Thanks for sharing the additional ethnic information, Heather. Overall, the document looks fantastic and you and your team did a great job. I do agree with Kenjii that the industry needs to do a better job of recruiting African American planners. Advertising reflects popular culture and many of the leading indicators for pop culture have African Americans in the forefront. I’m not advocating quotas but common sense should tell us that there’s enough talent out there to do better than 3%. From what I’m hearing, the industry could also do a better job of paying the few they do have…ah, but that’s a discussion for another time.

  29. Hi,

First of all, gratz for leading this movement! Its such a great project!

Im from Brasil but Im working in Portugal and planning is in baby steps here. We are launching APG anytime this month and having the Portugal part of the survey would be awesome. Is there any plan on this direction?

    Thank you Heather

    • Hi Alexandre,

What I’ve told people from other countries, we need a sub-group size of 100 in order to look at it properly. With 9 participants in Portugal, if I share the information their anonymity is hardly protected and it’s too small to really know much. Perhaps a southern europe group would make sense? Spain + Italy + Portugal? And of course we need your help to spread the word and get the number of participants up to 100.

      Heather

      • I see what you mean on the anonymity issue. Thank you any way. I personally don’t know the Italian market, but the Spanish is way more developed than Portugal, so the group would not work for us. Anyway, thank you a lot. And keep up the awesome work.
